ENGLISH NATIONAL INTER-CLUB KO ‘DENNY’ FINALS AT FALCON IBC

ESSEX COUNTY IBC WIN ‘DENNY PLATE’

English Indoor Bowling Association Competitions

The Essex County Indoor Bowling Club from Westcliff-on-Sea are the new English Indoor Bowling Association Inter-Club ‘Denny Plate’ Champions for 2011 having conquered Plymouth IBC in the Semi-Final and Lincoln IBC in the Final on Saturday 16 April. This is the first time in the clubs history that they have won this national trophy.

Playing in front of a large crowd of supporters and starting at 9.30am the Essex County IBC team played Plymouth IBC in the Semi-Final with Lincoln IBC meeting Pinewood Park IBC, Norfolk in the other Semi-Final. Essex County were too strong for the Plymouth visitors and after ten ends across the four rinks they were eighteen shots ahead. They maintained this lead to the end finishing twenty one shots up. The result was Essex County 85 Plymouth 64 with the individual rink scores being with Essex County skips named first – Ian Middlemast 16 Olly Lucas 14, Ed Morris 24 Stuart Evans 13, Steve Cooper 20 Glyn Lawrence 19, Neil Jackson 25 Mike Avent 18. Lincoln beat Pinewood Park 76 – 73 in a very close game with Pinewood Park being unlucky not to progress having won three of the four rink matches. England International Billy Jackson’s Lincoln rink won comfortably 32 – 12 to give the Lincoln team the edge.

Essex County and Lincoln were back on the eight rink bowling green at 2.30pm for the Final for another near four hour battle. Essex County made a good start being five shots up at the five end point. They built upon this lead by adding another ten shots over the next five ends to be 48 – 32 in the lead. At this point the Essex County rinks stormed ahead playing top class bowls to go into a thirty two shot lead at fifteen ends. With all rinks playing well and Lincoln struggling to contain the Essex County onslaught the game was conceded by Lincoln at eighteen ends with their opponents enjoying a well deserved 89 – 58 win. The rink scores were – Ian Middlemast 27 Billy Jackson 11, Ed Morris 11 Tony Gilroy 23, Steve Cooper 26 George Draper 7, Neil Jackson 25 Mike Smith 12.

CITY OF ELY BOWLS CLUB WIN DENNY CUP

The City of Ely Indoor Bowling Club are the new English Indoor Bowling Association Inter-Club ‘Denny Cup’ Champions for 2011 having won in the final against Nottingham on Sunday 17 April.

Playing in front of a crowd of over 400 cheering, horn blowing and rattle waving supporters and watched by the Mayor and Mayoress Alan and Jackie Arnott of Chelmsford. The City of Ely IBC had a comfortable win against Moonfleet 2000 IBC Weymouth in the Semi-Final by 36 shots across the four rinks. City of Ely fielded three English Internationals in their team Greg Harlow, Nicky Brett and Andrew Easy. Harlow was recently crowned as the English National Singles Champion and a previous World Indoor Bowls Singles winner. Brett also has an excellent pedigree having won many English National titles. The rinks scores were with City of Ely skips named first – Greg Harlow 21 Warren Smith 17, Nicky Brett 23 Barry Patterson 10, Andrew Easy 22 Neil Burroughs 17, Andrew Ware 22 Martin Puckett 8. City of Ely 88 Moonfleet 2000 52. The second Semi-Final between Nottingham IBC and Acle IBC Norfolk had the Midlanders in full control of this match winning by 28 shots. Nottingham fielded English Internationals Brett Morley, Phil Broughton and Simon Skelton with all three playing quality bowls throughout supported by a top class club team. The rinks scores were with Nottingham IBC skips named first – Duncan Robinson 19 George Tubby 15, Brett Morley 16 Jason Roope 20, Phil Broughton 21 Lewis Moore 10, Simon Skelton 29 Tim Stone 12. Nottingham 85 Acle 57.

A very close match was forecast from the two finalists and the large crowd of supporters were not to be disappointed. The Final kicked off at 2.30pm with both Nottingham and City of Ely all square 19 – 19 at the five end point. City of Ely edged away slightly over the next five ends across the four rinks to go four up 43 – 39. No quarter was being given by either side with dramatic top quality pin point bowls being performed by both teams. Who would break first was on every ones lips in this tense struggle with the next five ends being scored with no change in the lead. Ely maintained their four shot advantage at the fifteen end mark at 59 – 55. At this point Ely stepped up a gear to the delight of their large band of supporters to play themselves into an improved lead being fifteen shots ahead at nineteen ends of this twenty one end match. Nottingham still had a chance to pull the match back to their favour but Ely were having none of this and eventually ran out winners by seventeen shots in a match to remember. England President Maurice Mayes presented trophies and badges to winners and runners up and congratulated both teams for putting on an excellent display of top quality indoor bowls. The rinks scores were – Greg Harlow 21 Duncan Robinson 15, Nicky Brett 20 Bret Morley 20, Andrew Easey 20 Phil Broughton 17, Andrew Ware 24 Simon Skelton 16. City of Ely 85 Nottingham 68.

New Falcon IBC Champions crowned

The Falcon Indoor Bowls Club completed its winter season on Saturday 9 April with the Annual Club Finals. In a packed programme of bowls finals which went on throughout the whole day two new Club Singles Champions were crowned. In the men’s final between Andy Squire and James Rippey, Squire played the better game throughout against the last year’s winner to win 21 – 14. Both players had been heavily engaged for almost the whole of the previous week playing in the national Championships at Nottingham IBC. The Ladies final was between Carol Saville and Maureen Ellis with Saville on top throughout to take the title for the first time winning 21 – 11. Both winners now go forward to represent the club in the National Champion of Champions event in season 2011/12.

Other winners from the finals were – Ladies Club Triples - June Greenwood, Carol Saville and skip Brenda Dodson. Ladies Club Pairs – Joy Finch and Pauline Adams. Ladies PYO Pairs – Chris Watts and Audrey Smith. Ladies Presidents Cup – Shirley Beavis, Pat Wallis and skip Jean Wyatt. Ladies PYO Triples – Shirley Beavis, Jackie Thomas and skip Pip Kitchin. Men’s Unbadged Singles – Derek Taylor. Junior Singles – Steven Dunn. Men’s Fours – Alan Smith, Tom Anderson, John Weatherley and skip Mark Morhall. Men’s Triples – Keith Kerr, Tony Collings and skip Terry Little. Mixed Pairs – Joy Wade and Ian Muir.

President Margaret Camp said, “We have been treated to another exciting finals day at Falcon IBC by our finalists who have provided the large crowd of members present with some top class bowls. The club goes from strength to strength with many new young people coming through our development programme. My congratulations to all of the winners and runners-up for their performance at our Finals Day”.
